All code classes are for the Journeyman Competency Card.

There are no Master Comp Card classes.

City Oil Code (Register by August 11)
Six-week course, September start. This class is required for Underground Tank Certification by the state of Minnesota.

This class covers the Uniform Building Code regarding fuel oil. The class is available to all Journeymen, but the test is limited to those who have the required experience and can meet specific requirements.

Cost: $35 ($25 plus $10 book fee)

City Gas Code
Six-week course

This class covers the Uniform Building Code as it relates to Gas Systems. The class is available to all Journeymen, but the test is limited to those who have the required experience and can meet specific requirements.

Cost: $105 ($25 plus $80 book fee)

City Refrigeration Code
Six-week course

This class covers the Uniform Building Code as it relates to refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The class is available to all Journeymen, but the test is limited to those who have the required experience and can meet specific
requirements.

Cost: $25

City LP Steam/Hot Water
Six-week course

This class covers the Uniform Building Code as it relates to Low-Pressure Steam and Hot Water piping and systems. The class is available to all Journeymen, but the test is limited to those who have the required experience and can meet specific requirements.

Cost: $41 ($25 plus $16 book fee)

State High Pressure Steam Code

This class covers the State High Pressure Steam and Ammonia code. The class is available to all Journeymen, but the test is limited to those who have the required experience and can meet specific requirements.

Cost: $53 ($25 plus $28 book fee)

JM Fall Welding (Register by August 11)
Eight nights starting in September. Space is limited.

Welding tests are scheduled on an as-needed basis. Please review the UA Weld Test Program to determine which test you want to take, and then call the training center to get your name on the list. Once a test date is scheduled you will be notified of the date and time.

Cost: $100 if working;
$75 if not working

JM Spring Welding
Eight nights starting in April.

OSHA 10-Hour Certification (Register by July 23)
Three nights, August start.

Ten-hour OSHA safety training (10 hr. OSHA card upon successful completion.)

Cost: $25

OSHA 30-Hour Certification
Additional five nights in August following OSHA 10.

30-hour OSHA safety training. Must attend all 8 nights within six months to get this certification. (30 hr. OSHA card upon successful completion.)

MSHA 24-Hour Certification
Six nights starting in September. (Held off-site at Dunwoody)

Upon the completion of this 24-hour course, you will receive the MSHA certification required to work in a mine. Please note this certification requires an 8-hour refresher course each year. The course covers Introduction to the mine work environment, Health Hazards in the Mine Environment, Emergency medical procedures; escape and emergency evacuation plans; fire warning signals and firefighting procedures, Statutory rights of miners and their representatives, Hazard Recognition and procedures for reporting hazards, Fall Prevention/Protection, Silica Hazard Awareness, Electrical Hazards, Confined Space Hazards.

MSHA 8-Hour Refresher (Required every 12 months)
Two nights, starting in September. (Held off-site at Dunwoody)

MSHA certification required to work in a mine requires this 8-hour refresher course each year.

Cost: $25

Qualified Signal Person Certification
One night, must pass written and practical tests for certification.
Must have all Standard Hand Signals memorized before class.

This 1-night course covers hand, voice, and radio signals used with cranes, and crane operating characteristics and limitations. Upon completion of this class you will meet the signal person qualification requirements of OSHA 29 CFR subpart CC (1926.1419-1926.1422; 1926.1428) and will be issued a Qualified Signal Person card.

CFC Certification

This course studies the current EPA laws regarding the recycling, reclaiming and recovering of high and low pressure refrigerants. (U.A. CFC Certification upon successful completion.)

Underground Tank Re-Certification **Thru MPCA**
The JAC no longer offers the Underground Tank Certification or Re-Certification Course.

Journeymen seeking re-certification can go to the MPCA website and sign up for the one day re-certification course. It is advisable to register at least 6 to 8 months before your certification expires.

UA STAR HVACR Certification

This course will review for the UA STAR HVACR Technician Certification exam. The exam will be the final night of class and will be proctored by the NITC. The cost of the exam is $136.00.

Cost: $51 ($25 plus $25 book fee)

UA 50 & 51 Brazing Certification
Brazing tests are scheduled on an as-needed basis.

Power Limited License Renewal

This 8-hour course meets the 8 CEUs of continuing education required by the State Board of Electricity for license renewal. Renewals require 16 hours of CEUs, so it is recommended a renewal class be taken every year.

Additional Journeyman Classes

Advanced Rigging

This 6-night course focuses on hands-on rigging applications, including drifting lengths of pipe, picking loads with an off center gravity, handing off and inverting loads. The course also covers calculating load weights as well as planning the load path, and will review rigging components, hand signals, hardware selection, & crane operating characteristics.

Ammonia

This 6-night course covers an introduction to ammonia, its operation and introduction to compound systems and safety factors.

Cost: $43 ($25 plus $18 book fee)

ARC Flash Safety - NFPA 70E
Prerequisite: Must have an HVACR Electrical Background

This course covers OSHA and NFPA safety requirements and procedures. Topics include hazardous energy isolation, electrical safety, and arc flash safety.

Cost: $124 ($25 plus $99 book fee)

Basic Refrigeration

This 10-night, hands-on course covers the fundamentals of refrigeration and air conditioning and includes the study of basic refrigeration theory, system components and basic control systems.

Cost: $80 ($25 plus $55 book fee)

Burner/Boiler Start-up

This course is designed to teach the basic start-up of gas and oil burners. It covers the proper sizing of burners to the boiler, gas and oil train code requirements, and basic control functions and troubleshooting. (Class size is limited to 12)

Cost: $53 ($25 plus $28 book fee)

Commercial Refrigeration

This 14-week course covers the main components of a supermarket refrigeration system including oil management, head pressure controls, EPRs, CPRs, compressor components, electronic valves, proper piping practices, as well as many different application and start-up procedures of a commercial refrigeration system. This course requires a good knowledge of electricity and refrigeration systems.

Cost: $36 ($25 plus $11 book fee)

C.O.M.E.T.

Cost: $0

DDC/Building Automation

This course will cover the main components of a building automation system including set-up, troubleshooting and calibration procedures for I to P transducers, sensors and electronic actuators. The student will set up, program and wire VAV/DDC boxes, create graphic displays, tune P.I.D. loops. Trane Summit, Tracker, and Alerton automation systems will also be covered. Class size limited from 10-12.

Cost: $41 ($25 plus $16 book fee)

Foreman Training

This 6-night course covers basic blue print skills, creating material lists, projecting manpower needs, people skills and understanding contractor needs.

Orbital Pipe Welding

This course will cover everything from basics of orbital welding methods; weld machine programing, and practical orbital welding exercises. At the conclusion of this course the participants will have the opportunity to take the UA 18A orbital welding certification.

Cost: $58 ($25 plus $33 book fee)

Heat Fusion Joining of Polyethylene Pipe

This course will cover everything from basics to electrofusion methods. Practical application in heat fusion and electrofusion will be included.

Lokring Certification ** NEW **

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a factory certification to install the Lokring product.

Pneumatic Controls

This 14-night course covers pneumatic control systems, trouble shooting and common energy retrofits. Students will study actual control drawings and how each component functions in the control circuit. Prerequisite for this course is Pneumatic Controls 1 or the student must have a good knowledge of pneumatic control systems.

Cost: $94 ($25 plus $69 book fee)

PRO10/CORE 4

This is a 10-hour course. The first 4-hour night (CORE 4) covers the core training topics, while the second and third 3-hour nights cover various approved topics. Journeyman who have completed the LU 539 apprenticeship program within the last 5 years fulfill the required 6 hours of additional training topics, and will qualify for the PRO-10 card by completing the CORE 4 training.

Trimble Training - Basic

This class is a one-night introduction to Trimble. Trimble’s mix of hardware, software and mobility technologies streamlines communication and collaboration throughout the construction lifecycle. Members who work on CAD or BIM projects may be using this technology currently or will be in the near future and should consider taking this training.

Trimble Training - Advanced
The Basic Trimble class is a prerequisite for this class.

This is a one-night class on the practical application of Trimble. This class provides you with hands-on training of the Trimble Product line. You will map and set up points using Trimble.

Classes are filled on a first come/first serve basis and may be limited in size. All registrations are due in September, except for the classes with early registration due dates noted. Approximately two weeks prior to the start of each class, you will be notified as to the time and place if a spot is being held for you.
